Three practical options

Which NanoVNA suits you?

A compact comparison for students: from an accessible analyzer for HF and VHF to a more accurate model with a wider frequency range.

A choice that suits you

Your choice of NanoVNA depends on your plans

We are regularly asked: “Which NanoVNA should I buy?” It is an understandable question. There is a wide choice, and devices that look very similar at first glance can differ considerably in design, operation and included accessories. There is no single answer that suits everyone. The right NanoVNA for you depends mainly on what you want to measure, where you will use it and how much experience you have.

These guidelines are intended to help you make your own choice. Start with a different question: what do you want your measurements to tell you? Will you mainly adjust antennas, investigate cables or measure filters? Are you new to vector measurements, or do you already have experience and need an instrument for specific experiments? Thinking this through first makes it easier to decide which features matter to you.

Frequency range and ease of use

Your operating frequency range also matters. Do not focus only on the highest number in an advertisement. A wide specified frequency range does not tell the whole story. What matters is whether the device is suitable for the measurements you will actually make. A model with more features is therefore not automatically the best choice for your situation.

Ease of use deserves attention too. A larger screen can be helpful when you want to view several measurements together or find a small touchscreen difficult to use. A compact device can be convenient if space is limited or you want to carry it around. Consider where you will measure: at your workbench, during a club evening or outside beside an antenna. What looks attractive in a product photo may not be the most comfortable option in everyday use.

Consider the complete package

The instrument itself is only part of your measurement setup. You also need suitable cables, connectors, adapters and calibration standards. Check carefully what is included and what you may need to buy separately. A lower purchase price can become less attractive if several essential accessories must be added afterwards.

For our course, the main priority is that you can use your NanoVNA comfortably and carry out the assignments. You do not need the most expensive or most advanced model. We focus on selecting an appropriate frequency range, careful calibration and understanding the display. These skills help you draw useful conclusions from your measurements.

If you already own a NanoVNA, that is a good starting point. Explore what it can do and what limitations you actually encounter before considering a replacement.

Use the comparison below to help you decide. Consider your measurement goals, frequency range, preferred controls and total budget together. You can then choose the model that fits your plans, experience and way of working.

Quick comparison

Look beyond the GHz figure

For the course, a reliable instrument, a usable screen and good calibration standards matter more than the largest number on the box. Before buying, check the exact hardware version, included accessories and seller.

ModelSpecified rangeScreenBest suited to
NanoVNA-H410 kHz–1.5 GHz*4 inchCourse, HF/VHF and antenna work
NanoVNA-F V250 kHz–3 GHz4.3 inchLarger screen and wider UHF coverage
NanoVNA V2 Plus450 kHz–4 GHz4 inchFilters, higher frequencies and more demanding measurements

*The H4 uses harmonics above its fundamental range; dynamic range and measurement quality decrease at higher frequencies. Do not choose a model solely by its advertised maximum frequency.

Mid-range

NanoVNA-F V2

Worth considering if you want a larger screen, metal enclosure and wider frequency coverage for experiments above VHF.

  • Spacious 4.3-inch display and usually a large battery
  • Specified range up to 3 GHz
  • Check exactly which hardware version the seller supplies

Advanced

NanoVNA V2 Plus4

The strongest of these three options for higher frequencies, filter measurements and users needing more dynamic range and shielding.

  • Fundamental measurements up to around 4 GHz
  • Metal shielding and greater dynamic range
  • Take particular care to distinguish the original from similarly named clones
